Current Sushi

Deal: $20 for $40 worth of Sushi & Drinks at Current

Grade: D

After conquering my Groupon-Rookie Mistake, we headed to Current in Dupont Circle (DC).

Looking back on our dinner, we should not have gone through so much trouble to find a Kinko’s, because I probably would have been happier eating at Nando’s Peri-Peri across the street.

We started out with cocktails and edamame.  I ordered a Regular Mojito and Ted had a Mango Mojito.

Mojitos

Mine tasted like straight rubbing alcohol, but the Mango Mojito, wasn’t bad.

The edamame was delicious…

…although, it’s hard to mess up edamame.

For our main course, we ordered the Yakuza Sushi Tasting – an assortment of nigiri and a sushi roll.

The tasting was ok – some good pieces, some not so great.

For those of you who haven’t yet used your Current Groupon, I’d stick with just sushi rolls.

Overall, the atmosphere at Current was trendy but way too loud, the service was marginal, and the sushi and drinks were way over priced.

We paid $20 in addition to the Groupon plus tip and were still hungry when we left.

Final Verdict: I would not dine at Current again, even with a Groupon.

*I suggest Cafe Asia or SushiKo for delicious, reasonably priced sushi in DC*

Sushiko is 10x as good. Current is a great place to get trendy and buy overpriced drinks, but not the best sushi or value. Heck, now that I think about it, I only went there once and I don’t think I will go back for either drinks or sushi. Too many great spots around DC.

I have been to current and had their sushi multiple times and had the sushi tasting that you show up on the page and found it to be exquisite and fresh as the best sushi can be. I have eaten at sushi-ko and their sushi is very good. It was my first sushi experience in dc 20 years ago, but the place is boring and the rolls uncreative albeit a little cheaper. The plastic chairs are also unconfortable as hell.
But to compare the sushi a current to the sushi at Cafe asia where the sushi chefs are not even japanese and the sushi is at best mediocre tells me that you have no idea what good sushi is and maybe you should stick to reviewing burger joints instead and leave the food review to tom sietsma. to say “The tasting was ok – some good pieces, some not so great.” ?? for a review on nigiri is totally ignorant, if you don’t personally like the taste of let’s say horse mackarel which I personally don’t care for myself, does not make it bad sushi.” Was it fresh? did you know what were the fish that you had on yakuza platter. Can you name them?
Have you been to sushi Taro, great sushi place. tasting menus for about 85 per person. Very expensive, not great value but very good sushi. How about kaz sushi bistro, great sushi not cheap. Have you tried Sei. Also great sushi but expensive as hell.

The only thing that you were definitely right about is that the place gets loud and the service is not the best but that has no reflection on the food

      John,

I am in no way calling myself a food critic or trying to serve as a food critic through this blog. My main focus is the deals that I buy through Groupon, and I was disappointed with the deal that Current offered. I have had many similar sushi tastings and order nigiri often and was unimpressed with the tasting at Current. Perhaps I was there on a bad night, but the fact that the drinks were not good, the service was terrible and the atmosphere way too loud, still makes it a restaurant that I do not wish to try again — life is too short.
